Authors: Nikola & Danijel Jurković ISBN: 953-6647-81-8 Format: 17,5 x 23,5 cm, 180 pgs, hard cover, 2005 This book is selected as a learning support on The University of Brighton (Faculty of education and sport), Great Britain. This book covers a wide scope of topics about skiing. Both its authors have dedicated a major part of their professional life to this sport, to tackling teaching and learning issues at ski schools, coaching racers and educating ski instructors, demonstrators and coaches. This manual is aimed at conveying some of their experience and knowledge to ski experts in the first place, as well as to recreational skiers and beginners. To make it attractive to a wider audience, its contents are presented in a way which is comprehensive even to those without any knowledge of the subject matter. "Skiing" deals with several historic aspects of the sport and its development, basics of biomechanics, discipline, technique and the fundamentals of on and off snow training of skiers. The authors had two very important motives for writing this book: 1. Skiing as a sport has undergone great changes since the mid-1990s. To a lesser extent theses changes are due to the usual developments, as is the case with the majority of other sports, but mainly to technological advancements, primarily the construction of carving skis. This ski construction required changes in the ski technique of the racers and top skiers. Simultaneously, ski experts were explaining a new skiing technique and inventing the methodology for its rapid mastering and further development. Currently, the only relevant written publication available in Croatia is the "Basics of the Ski Technique and Methodology" by Danijel Jurković. This teaching aid is intended exclusively for trainee ski instructors. "Skiing" is very much based on this manual, particularly Chapters 2 and 4, although it is much more detailed and rich in photos (252), drawings and tables. 2. Generally, technical ski literature is scarce and rarely published. "Skiing" is an addition to the literature about skiing since ski technique has undergone profound changes, caused by the development of the carving skis.
